San Leonardo is Tenuta San Leonardo's flagship and is made from Cabernet Sauvignon (usually approx. 60%), Carmenère (30%) and Merlot – in a blend that varies slightly depending on the vintage. The wines from the different grapes are fermented spontaneously and matured separately and only the best barrels are put together in the final wine. The wine is matured for two years in new and 1-2 year old French barriques (225 l.) and remains for at least one year in the cellar after bottling.
The wine has an intense, dark, ruby red color. The aroma is very complex and deep, with dark notes of wild berries, pepper and a little vanilla. Right after pouring into the glass, the wine is a bit closed in taste, but with a little oxygenation it pours in with flavor impressions. Lots of spices, a good velvet and concentrated notes of dark berries, vanilla and a little wood. In the aftertaste you can feel the high content of Cabernet Sauvignon, with a good structure and a very balanced dryness. A very complex wine. A good companion for lamb and game dishes, for poultry in red wine sauces, beef, but also for mature white cheeses.
