Wine Spectator top 100 2019 (No. 38)
Autinbej is the newest member of Ca del Baio's family of excellent Barbaresco wines.
A young vineyard planted as late as 2008 often takes many years to show its full potential, but Autinbej delivers from the start and was thus included in Wine Spectator's top 100 list of 2019's best wines!
The distinctive name comes from winemaker Giolio Grasso's father, who often used the expression, Autinbej, which in the local dialect means the most ideal place in the vineyard.
The Nebbiolo grapes are precisely planted in an optimal position in relation to the sun, which produces excellent, complex wines.
After harvest in vinification, the wine is aged for 24 months in wooden barrels, and spends another 4 months in the cellar after it is bottled.
The storage potential is large, and Autinbej will develop positively over the next 10-15 years.
The color is deep red and the scent is intense, with a rich aroma of red fruits; raspberries, blackberries and violets in abundance, followed by fine hints of spices and cocoa.
The taste is warm, long and persistent with light tannins and an aftertaste with fruity notes.
If you serve it within the first 4-5 years after bottling, it should be opened 1-2 hours before serving and possibly aerated in a carafe.
