Lions de Batailley 2019 - Pauillac

“Lions de Batailley” is the so-called second wine of Château de Batailley and takes its name (“lions” means lions in French) from the two stone lions that guard the entrance to the castle. The wine is composed of wines from plots with young vines, as well as wines that are sorted out during the blending of the first wine.

As is the case with the chateau's first wine, Lions de Batailley receives a luxurious treatment with a long, cool fermentation in steel tanks with frequent stirring, a malolactic fermentation and a maturation for 18 months in 225 l French barriques, of which 40% are new and the rest one year old.

The wine has the classic fullness and meatiness of the château, but the higher proportion of Merlot gives a more rounded and slightly more delicate wine in its youth. It has a good balance between fruitiness, structure and tannins, and will undoubtedly mature faster than the first wine. Like its big brother, Lions de Batailley can tolerate being decanted before serving. It will be a good companion to red meat, game birds or lamb, but will also dress up rich, Mediterranean-inspired vegetable dishes.
