Do you need a little change from the classic Gin & Tonic? Here are 3 recipes for classic, tasty gin cocktails that can be made without much effort - and taste like heaven!
In all 3 recipes, we take Sacred Old Tom as our starting point, voted World's Best Old Tom in 2019 - and the obvious main ingredient in a classic cocktail.
The only ingredients and tools you need are:
- Sacred Old Tom Gin
- Cocktail shaker
- Strainer (Sieve)
- Sugar syrup (1 part water and 1 part sugar, bring to a light boil and cool in the refrigerator. Keeps for 1-2 weeks in a closed container).
- Orange bitters
- Lemon/Lime
- Danish water
- Vermouth
1. Old Tom Martini
The gin cocktail of them all comes in countless variations, but we think this Old Tom version is both classic and good.
How to make an Old Tom Martini:
- Fill the shaker glass with ice, and pour 6 cl Old Tom Gin and 3 cl dry Vermouth (We recommend La Quintinye ), and 2-3 splashes of orange bitters.
- Stir well until everything is well chilled - at least 30 times, then pour everything into the glass - remember to use the strainer, as no ice is needed - if you're really careful, you've chilled your martini glasses beforehand.
- Garnish with a strip of lemon peel, run the top of the peel around the rim of the glass (to release the citrus aroma) before garnishing.
2. Old Tom Collins
Yes, you guessed it; the Tom Collins got its name from the good old Old Tom Gin. The Tom Collins was a cocktail favorite in the mid-19th century - the same period when Old Tom was the gin of choice.
Make your own Old Tom Collins:
- Fill the shaker with ice, then add 4.5 cl Sacred Old Tom Gin, 1.5 cl lemon juice and 1.5 cl sugar syrup.
- Fill a highball (Tom Collins) glass with ice, shake the shaker well and use the strainer when pouring.
- Top the glass with sparkling water (max 10-12 cl) and garnish with a lemon slice or 3.
3. Old Tom Gimlet
Another one of those old, classic cocktails that has had a renaissance and is now hotter than ever.
You may have tried the version with Rose's Lime; a bit too sweet and teenage for our taste - especially when it's so easy to make the real thing.
This is how easy it is to make an Old Tom Gimlet:
- Fill the cocktail shaker with ice, 6 cl Tanqueray Old Tom, 3 cl freshly squeezed lime juice and 1.5 cl sugar syrup.
- Shake well and using the strainer, pour into a lowball glass filled with ice. Garnish with a slice of lime.
