All Scylla, no filly
With Birichino's unique sense of flavourful, complex wines, Scylla is a beautiful addition to the portfolio.
Primarily grown on fields in the Lodi area, the backbone is made up of two old Carignan vineyards, planted back in 1920. These are complemented by Birichino's permanent, century-old vineyards of Grenache and Mourvedre - this brings the average age of the vines to 99 years!
Scylla is a charming acquaintance; raw, yet silky . Lightly perfumed on the nose, yet still firm on the palate.
Yes, we are tempted to say that you are uplifted - at least you feel like having another glass.
The Carignan grape is known/notorious for high acidity and many tannins, a powerhouse - a bit like the 6-headed sea monster from Homer's Odyssey, from which Scylla gets its name.
But, but, but.... when you reach the, also for vines, high age of 99 years, you become more pliable. This also applies to Scylla's Carignan - the old grapes are expressive and complex, the tannins are nicely controlled and you can safely let yourself be sucked into a maelstrom of refreshing red fruit.
