For many, terroir (soil conditions) is the Alpha and Omega for good wine production. This is also the case at Argentinian Kaiken, where the philosophy is that 80% of the wine is created in the vineyard, and only the last 20% is achieved by the winemaker's final touch in the cellar.

When Aurelio Montes Sr. turned his attention to Argentina, he was already recognized as one of the most experienced and skilled winemakers in his native Chile, where Montes wines had gained international recognition in record time. When he chose to establish a winery in Argentina, it was to take advantage of the unique soil conditions in Mendoza and create Argentina's best wines.

Kaiken is named after the wild geese, Caiquenes, that fly over the Andes every year and herald the arrival of spring. Like the geese, Montes traveled over the Andes and founded Kaiken in neighboring Argentina. The winemaker and head of Kaiken is Aurelio Montes Jr., making the Montes family the only one in South America where both father and son are winemakers.

Sustainability has been a part of Kaiken's wine production since the beginning in 2001. Like Montes, they work according to biodynamic principles, with 60% biodynamic production and a hope to be 100% biodynamic from 2017.
