Collection: Marquis of Murrieta

Marques de Murrieta

Back in 1878, Luciano de Murrieta bought the Ygay estate, a few kilometers from the city of Logroño, and founded the first real “Château” in Rioja.

In 1983, the Murrieta family sold the property to Vicente Cerbrián Sagarriga, Count of Creixell, who undertook a major renovation, both structurally and viticulturally. His goal was not to completely change the property, but to preserve the high quality of the wine. He added the equipment that would make Marqués de Murrieta one of the best wine producers in the world.

Unfortunately, the Count died in 1996, at the age of only 48. His wife and children decided to continue his great work. Today, it is his son V. Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, the Count of Creixell, and his sister Cristina who continue the family wine company with great courage and enthusiasm - they have just completed a major renovation of the production facilities worth over 100 million kroner and the result is impressive!

The property itself and the vineyards, which today comprise 300 hectares, are located in the southern part of Rioja Alta, in the area locally known as “the three Marquises”, as the properties Marqués de Murrieta, Marqués de Vargas and Marqués de Romeral are located here in immediate extension of each other. Here the temperature is usually higher than in the other areas of Rioja.
