"If only it were true!" - the slightly ironic Italian expression "Magari" is a fitting name for the proud Rosso de Toscana, from Gaja's Ca'Marcanda vineyard in the Bolgheri district.
Magari is an expression of how much Gaja is capable of with relatively young grapes, at the newer, state-of-the-art winery Ca'Marcanda.
Magari consists of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 3 grape varieties are fermented separately, blended and left to age in small oak barrels that have been treated according to Angelo Gaja's instructions. After 18 months in barrels, the wine is bottled and left to age for another 6 months before being released for sale.
On the nose, Magari offers plenty of coffee, leather, blackcurrant and licorice. The taste is a bombardment of concentrated fruit, balanced with pleasant tannins from the barrel aging.
Buy it as an investment now as Magari will continue to develop for the next 10 - 15 years.
