Lapostolle Clos Apalta is one of Chile's best wines - perhaps even South America's best wine!
Clos Apalta is a red wine in a distinct Bordeaux style, very elegant, with lots of finesse - and it is even organic and biodynamic.
In the glass, Clos Apalta 2014 is a deep ruby red with a hint of purple at the edges. The aroma opens with a broad palette of dark fruits, cassis, blackberries and figs, followed by cinnamon, licorice and roasted nuts.
In the mouth, Clos Apalta opens with an intense and almost creamy 'attack', followed by beautiful dark fruits. The velvety tannins open slowly, leading to a long, intense and very elegant finish.
This is a true investment wine; few bottles produced, towering reviews and enormous aging potential.
The Clos Apalta winery was founded in 1827 and is located in the Colchagua Valley, 170 km southwest of Santiago.
The vines are planted in granitic clay soil, where they benefit from a Mediterranean-like climate with hot, dry summers and rainy winters.
The large temperature difference between day and night gives intense color and tannin to the wines, while the gradual ripening of the grapes results in concentrated wines with great aging potential.
During fermentation, 95% of the wine was in large, French 75 hectoliter barrels and 5% in new French oak barrels from Bordeaux.
The finished blend is aged for 26 months in new 225 liter French oak barrels. Clos Apalta is not filtered or post-treated before bottling.
