Château de Pez 2019 – A classic vintage with modern finesse

The 2019 vintage started quietly and mildly with a dry winter, but a cool spring month held back growth a bit, so flowering took place at the normal time in late May and early June. The summer took its revenge, however – with plenty of sun, dry heat and cool nights, which together have created a wine with great balance, nerve and complexity. Here is both elegance and power – a wine that clearly bears the mark of the great vintage and deserves a good place in the cellar.

The grapes were harvested manually: Merlot from September 17th, while Cabernet and Petit Verdot were not fully ripe until around October 7th. Fermentation took place in both classic wooden vats and modern temperature-controlled steel tanks – a combination that provides both structure and finesse. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (35% new). Finally, the final blend was composed – with Cabernet Sauvignon at the forefront (56%) to provide backbone and aging potential.

In the glass it has a dark, intense colour and a beautiful glossy sheen. The aroma is deep and delicate – with notes of iris, currants, blackberries, licorice and a touch of fine, light tobacco. The taste is rich and round with silky tannins and good concentration. Here there are berry fruits in both fresh and pickled nuances, especially raspberries, which give life and charm. The tannins are present, but well integrated, and the wine's fruity core promises very well for the future.

A wine with great aging potential – but also enough charm to drink now. Serve it with spicy lamb, game or beef – it has both the depth and elegance to match it all.
