Fixin “Vieilles Vignes” from Domaine Humbert Frères is definitely one of the wines that has helped to increase the demand and fame of the wines from this often previously “forgotten” area. The brothers bought their plot (0.5 ha.) in Fixin in 2006, and at that time the vines were already 50 years old. The vineyard is located in the southern part of the Fixin slope, where you can find 3 types of soil: light stony marl, heavy clay and lime.
After a 3-6 day cool skin maceration to avoid bitter tannins, the wine is fermented in classic, open large wooden barrels. Maturation takes place in 228 l. barrels (33% new) made of oak from Châtillonnais in Burgundy (northwest of Dijon). The wine is bottled after a natural decantation and without filtration.
The Fixin wines are often a bit violent in their youth, but the “Vieilles-Vignes” from Humbert Frère is surprisingly elegant and velvety, with a rare harmony between strength, alcohol and fruit. It is a very well-made and almost charming Burgundy with lots of delicate fruit notes and an appetizing style in both the nose and the taste. With a little oxygenation in the glass it can be drunk in its youth, but it also has enough potential for a few years of aging.
