The story of “Brut Nature” began with Louis Roederer in the unusually warm and sunny 2003, when most vineyards in Champagne showed signs of “stress.” However, Roederer discovered that some of the family’s vineyards on very calcareous or clayey soils near Epernay, in Cumières, Hautvillers and Vertus, proved to be able to cope with the heat and especially the drought without any problems.

It was in 2003 that Frédéric Rouzaud – the 7th generation at the helm after Louis Roederer – met the French designer and architect Philippe Starck, and the idea of involving him in the creation of the new wine was born. In collaboration with Fréderic Rouzaud and his team, Philippe Starck has thus helped to define the philosophy of the wine. Three things must be prioritized: the natural, with respect for the vineyards and plants (biodynamic cultivation), the individual, with gentle vinification techniques (long fermentation in wooden barrels, no technical interventions, biodynamic methods) and finally the elegance of the wine.

In the 2015 vintage, which was excellent in Champagne, with the right climatic conditions in terms of heat and rain, which provided a perfect balance between concentration and freshness, it was possible (just like in 2012) to make a Brut Nature Rosé. The wine is made from 50% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 13% Pinot Meunier from Cumières. During the first fermentation, approximately 20% of the Pinot Noir grapes underwent a skin maceration for 5 days, and were then mixed with the white must from the remaining grapes. 11% of the wine was aged in wooden barrels and the rest in tanks – with a malolactic fermentation for approximately 30% of the wine. The second fermentation in the bottle lasted 5 years. The wine was not added “liqueur de dosage” during disgorging and is therefore on the dry end. After disgorging, the wine was further matured for 6 months before shipping.

The long fermentation in the bottle produces beautiful, persistent, small bubbles. The wine has a beautiful, light, rosé color. The aroma reveals nuances of blood oranges, cherries, blackcurrants and spices. The taste is very juicy and fruity with a good harmony between dry, cool nuances and more exotic, honey-like tones. It ends with both spicy, smoky and slightly salty nuances (umami). Pure pleasure!
