There are two wines from the Scarrone field on Vietti's property; the classic single-vineyard wine Scarrone and then there is "Vigna Vecchia Scarrone" which is made from grapes from the oldest vines in the field.
The vines are over 90 years old and therefore the yield on these vines is quite low, but offers a unique complexity.
The grapes undergo cold maceration before fermentation in open steel tanks with built-in pumping over and agitation, followed by a week of additional cool maceration. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in wooden barrels and matures for 18 months in a combination of large wooden barrels, barriques and steel tanks.
Vigna Vecchia Scarrone has a deep, ruby red color. The aroma has both the immediacy and fruitiness of youth and a beautiful concentration and complexity. The wine reveals nuances of blackberries and dark cherries. The taste is very full and with a rare fruit concentration and velvet for a Barbera. It ends very aromatic and harmonious, with lots of elegance, tannin and complexity.
Serve it with duck, lamb, beef or game, but also with mature cheeses.
